It is not a secret that the Nintendo Wii is a breakthrough in the way gaming consoles are designed and played. It has opened the minds of both gamers and game designers around the world and has everyone dreaming of advanced interactive videogame systems. Though the idea of virtual reality gaming is rather new, it is growing and the Nintendo Wii will surely be noted as an innovative stepping stone.
It is believed that the Nintendo Wii console was conceived in 2001, prior to the release of the Nintendo GameCube. The company as a whole was quite mysterious about the new development and the statements which were released were short, noncommittal and had many professionals wondering what the grandfather of gaming had up their sleeve.
It then took Nintendo and game designer Shigeru Miyamoto more than two years to finally put the entire gaming system together. They revealed the Nintendo Wii controller at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo and released a statement claiming that they had many issues and hours of trouble shooting to complete before revealing the entire working console. Later that year, in September the president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata demonstrated the games abilities and innovative interactive game style at the Tokyo Game Show.
When the game was finally released and made available to the public there was as much speculation about the company’s choice of name as there was about the game itself. Said to be inspired by the idea of multi-player fun, Nintendo described its name choice by saying that the two lower case letter “i” represented two people standing side-by-side. Some thought the name was too childish to be taken seriously and voiced the opinion that the games sales would suffer because people would think that the gaming system was primarily for children and young teens.
They were of course wrong and the Nintendo Wii continues to be one of the highest selling consoles in the history of home videogames. The Nintendo Wii is a breakthrough, and is the result of years of hard work and ingenious thinking but it is also something else, something just as important, it is fun!
